Animation movie Kuroko’s Basketball, known in Japan as Kuroko no Basket, is a Japanese sports manga series written and illustrated by Tadatoshi Fujimaki. The English rendering The Basketball Which Kuroko Plays also appears in the artwork of the Japanese version. It was serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump from December 2008 to September 2014, with the individual chapters collected into 30 tankōbon volumes by Shueisha. It tells the story of a high school basketball team trying to make it to the national tournament.
The graphic animation of this film is worth the applause. The animation of this film hadn’t been done from the grass roots because the story was picked up from the famous manga series and the character descriptions and storylines were pretty much already in place. Film Kuroko’s Basketball: Last Game had earned about 1.08 billion yen from the 753,000 ticket sales by May 15, in nine weeks since its domestic release on March 18. The all-new film directed by Shunsuke Tada, who directed the all three seasons of the TV anime series, is based on the eight-episode sequel manga series Kuroko’s Basketball Extra Game.
In commemoration of the successful long run, the Shinjuku Piccadilly theater in Tokyo will hold a special screening of the film with three main voice cast members: Kensho Ono (Tetsuya Kuroko), Yuuki Ono (Taiga Kagami), and Hiroshi Kamiya (Seijuro Akashi). If the name “Jabberwock” sounds familiar to you, it’s a reference to Lewis Carroll’s The Jabberwocky. This is one of the best parts of The Last Game because the name Jabberwock was a surprisingly good fit for the opposing team in the movie. Consider, Lewis Carroll’s poem tells the tale of a boy slaying the creature: the Jabberwock. In The Last Game, naming the opposing team the Jabberwock’s subtly tells the audience this is a “creature” that needs to be slain.
