The customary Diwali Aamir Khan release is back in town. This weekend the trailer of Thugs of Hindustan got released with a never seen before star cast and starring the fresh actor Fatima. The audience has never seen the set of all these actors sharing a screen space together. However, Katrina Kaif and Aamir Khan were earlier seen together in Dhoom: 3

A little preview of the movie

Thugs of Hindustan is an upcoming epic action-adventure movie directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya and produced by Aditya Chopra. The story’s based in 1795 when the East India Company entered the nation. The film follows a band of Thugs led by Azad who aspires to free India from the East India Company. The film follows a series of twists and turns when Aamir Khan plays a dual character betraying either of the two parties.

The film’s based on Philip Meadows Taylor’s 1839 novel Confessions of a Thug. This is a story of patriotism, courage, bravery, honour and sacrifice. We have earlier seen Aamir Khan play an interesting patriotic in Mangal Pandey. But this time siding with Britishers, we will see him playing a dual character.

Post-production of the film

Thugs of Hindustan is the second most expensive Bollywood film ever made. With a total budget of 300 crores, it is right next to the Rajinikanth starring 2.0. Crossing 45 million views in just four days this is still the most trending video on YouTube. One can say that such a glittering cast can get all the trends. But the actual truth is the VFX done by the production team.

The primary photography commenced on June 2017 in Malta. Four months later, they started with a dance sequence. Thailand and Mehrangarh were other locations used for shooting. But for the major part, several locations in Rajasthan got picked.

For the visual effects of this movie, large canvases of paintings got referred to the artists working in post-production. They took inference from these artistic pieces. A lot of sketches from museums drawn in the East India period were also taken into consideration. This helped them understand the greater depth of the project.

Thugs of Hindustan Visual effects

Thugs of Hindustan took around seven months for the completion of its editing. The director stated in a recent interview that the architecture had real painting descriptions. In addition to that, keeping in mind the theme they tried to create as realistic portraits as possible. It is always a challenge to do VFX for period dramas considering the amount of visual effects training given to supervisors.

In contemporary films, the time frame is not such an issue. Earlier, after watching the poster of the movie, a lot of people started comparing it with Pirates of the Caribbean. Aamir khan denied those rumours immediately.

You wouldn’t believe that the scenes shot on the ship by thugs who mainly star Amitabh Bachchan were all shot on land and with a huge amount of visual effects. The entire movie was primarily shot in front of greens screens and green props. For this movie, blue screens were not used because of the extensive aquatic shots. Considering Azad was a pirate and all the major fights were naval based; no blue screen used at all. It would have been very difficult to chroma key that. Working on a 300 crore budget is not easy to allocate. After watching the first trailer we can blindly say that majority of it was definitely for the visual effects.

What do we acquire?

With mainstream Bollywood films making such a massive breakthrough in the world of visual effects we surely are to see an incredible door opening for visual effects courses. No industry is any more a barrier in the world of VFX. If you are a VFX enthusiast then this film is definitely a must watch.
